Military History

Enlisted on 9 September 1914 aged 37 years and 4 days. Had previously served until 1910 and probably went to South Africa. He finished as time served. Tom was called back to the colours as he was still on the special reserve list. He was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and went to Gallipoli with them. It is probably he was wounded at Gallipoli and returned to UK. Once fit he was sent to France and the 10th Battalion. On 5th August 1916, the battalion relieved a battalion of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment. On 8th the 10th Battalion were tasked with attacking the enemy in Delville Wood and setting up posts. The first attempt was made at 4.30 pm but heavy machine gun fire stopped them. 'D' and 'C' companies did manage to get posts out and at midnight the attack went in again but was unsuccessful. Tom was killed in one of these assaults and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Somme
