Walter was born in 1898 in North Leverton and was the son of William John a yardman on a farm and Emily Mellars (nee Stafford) he was part of a large family his parents having had 12 children however five had failed to survive till adult and by the 1911 census 4 including Walter are living at home. In the 1911 census the family are living in North Leverton and Walter is 13 years of age and a wagoner on a farm. He subsequently met Doris Raynes whom he married on 14th February 1916 at St Peters Church, Heeley Sheffield he was 20 years of age at the time.
He enlisted in Retford and originally served with the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Sherwood Rangers with service number 2610 but later transferred to the 110th Company Machine Gun Corps He is buried in Epehy Wood farm Cemetery, Epehy, Somme, France. Pte Walter B Mellars Retford Times 1st March 1918 The above photograph of the late Pte Walter B Mellars, Habblesthorpe, who as reported last week, was killed in action in France on January 23rd. He enlisted in the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry but was subsequently transferred to the M. G. C. and went to France in the autumn of last year.
