Family History

Fred Challands was born in 1897 at Bradmore he was the youngest son of William a waggoner on farm and Annie Nancy Challands née Kettle of Bradmore William was born in 1855 at Muston he died on 9th February 1941 aged 85 years Annie Nancy was born in 1855 at Coston, Leicester she died 8 June 1929 aged 74 years they were married in 1880 their marriage was registered at the Grantham registration district they went on to have 15 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at Bradmore, William 56 yrs is a waggoner on a farm, he is living with his wife Nancy 56 yrs and four of their children including Fred 16 yrs a farm labourer

Military History

Sergeant Fred Challands enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters , he was later transferred to the 51st battalion , he died on 2nd July 1918 of pneumonia in military hospital. He is buried in St Marys Churchyard, Bunny, near North Boundary.

Inscription on headstone: 'In loving memory of Sgt Fred Challands, dearly loved youngest son of William and Nancy Challands, Bradmore, died July 2nd 1918 age 21 years. Thy will be done' In memoriam published 2nd July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CHALLANDS. – In ever-loving memory of Sergt. Fred Challands, Bradmore, died in Military Hospital of pneumonia, July 2nd, 1918, aged 21.
