Frank was the only son of William James and Lucy Edwards (nee Liptrot) William James was born in Hambleton, Gloucestershire, in 1856 and his wife Lucy, the daughter of Elijah and Elizabeth Liptrot, in Northwich, Cheshire, in 1858 (J/F/M Norwich, christened 30 March 1858 St George's Altrincham Cheshire). They were married in 1883 (O/N/D Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire) and had two children, Frank b. 1886 (J/A/S Basford) and Dora b. 1896 (A/M/J Basford). In 1901 William (45), a builders merchant working on his own account, and his wife were living at 28 Epperstone Road, West Bridgford, with their two children Frank (15), a telephone repairer and Dora (5). The family was still living at the same address in 1911; Frank was now a traveller in building materials, presumably assisting in his father's business. Frank married Agnes Richardson (Nancy) and at the time of his death in 1918 they were living at 8 Chaworth Road, West Bridgford. His sister Dora married Douglas Stewart in 1920 (A/M/J Basford). She may have died in 1982 as there is a record of the death on 6 November 1982 of a Dora Stewart of Jasmine Cottage, Wainfleet Bank, Skegness, Lincolnshire, born 22 March 1896, (death registered December Spilsby Lincs). Frank's mother died on 27 December 1938; she and her husband were still living at 28 Epperstone Road, West Bridgford. His father died on 3 January 1944, his address was given on the probate record as 582 Loughborough Road, Birstall, Leicestershire.
Royal Garrison Artillery, 61st Siege Bty. He died of wounds received in action and is buried in Merville Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref C.51). Personal inscription on headstone: ‘A dutiful son a devoted husband and father a sincere friend.' He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
