Walter Henry Burrows was born in 1892 at Lower Beauvale, Newthorpe and was the youngest son of the late Charles a retail assistant and Eliza Burrows nee Mellors of Beggarlee Lower Beauvale, Newthorpe. His father Charles was born in 1849 at Lower Beauvale, his mother Eliza Burrows was born in 1850 at Brinsley, they were married in 1871 their marriage was recorded at the Basford registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their children all of who were born in Greasley were , Charles b1870, William b1872, Joseph b1874, Samuel b1876, Sarah b1879, Phillis b1880, Eliza b1883, Arthur b1886 and Walter Henry b1892. In the 1911 census the family are living at Lower Beauvale, Newthorpe and are shown as Charles 62 yrs a retail assistant, he is living with his wife Eliza 61 yrs and their children Arthur 25 yrs a colliery banksman and Walter Henry 18 yrs a coal miner hewer.
Trumpeter Walter Henry Burrows enlisted at Greasley, Nottingham on 7th February 1911 he gave his age as 18 yrs and 2 months , his address was Lower Beauvale, Newthorpe, his next of kin was his father Charles of the same address. He served with the 1/1st battalion South Notts Hussars and was embodied for service on 5th August 1914. He saw service in Gallipoli from 12th April 1915 until he returned to England on 20th November 1915. Due to developing problems with his health whilst in trenches at Gallipoli he was placed before a medical board, which found him unfit for further war service and he was discharged from the Army on 22nd January 1916 with tuberculosis. He died on 15th November 1918 of Phthisis (Tuberculosis) and is buried in the family grave at St Mary's Churchyard at Greasley.
