Harry James was born in 1896 in Newcastle Upon Tyne and was the son of Harry a provisions merchant inspector and Flora Merry née Burroughs of 17, Bristol Rd, Sheffield. His father Harry was born in 1869 in Norwich and his mother Flora Burroughs was also born in 1869 in Birmingham, they were married in 1894 at Aston, Birmingham and went on to have 3 children, Harry James b1896 Newcastle Upon Tyne, Stanley Fred b1908 Liverpool and Walter Leslie b1910 West Bridgford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 84 Radcliffe Road, West Bridgford and are shown as Harry 42 yrs a provisions merchant inspector, he is living with his wife Flora 42 yrs and their children Harry James 15 yrs , Stanley Fred 3 yrs and Walter Leslie 1 yrs, also living with them is Sarah Ann Burroughs 70 yrs a widow b1841 mother in law.
Private Harry James Merry, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at West Bridgford, initially served with service number 012266 with the Army Ordnance Corps. He was serving with the 12th (Pioneer) Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, when he was killed in action on 27th June 1917. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate,Memorial, Ypres.
In memoriam published 26th June 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- MERRY. – Killed in action June 26th, 1917, Private H. J. Merry, Sherwood Foresters, 84, Radcliffe-road, West Bridgford.
