Family History

John Robert Wells was born in 1881 at Rufford and was the son of Herbert and Sarah Ann Wells née Godfrey of Oxton. His father Herbert was born in 1857 at North Scarle and his mother Sarah Ann Godfrey was born in 1858 at Eakring they were married on 23rd August 1877 at Eakring, they went on to have the following children, Laura b1878 Rufford, John Robert b1881 Rufford, Lewis b1882 Southwell, William b1885 Rufford, George b1887 Rufford, Florence b1889 Kirklington, Frederick b1891 Arnold, Sarah b1894 Calverton, Lucy b1897 Oxton and Elsie born 1901 Oxton. John Robert married Mary Ann Carter in 1906 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district, they went on to have a daughter Marjories Elizabeth born 1909 at Papplewick. In the 1911 census the family are living at Papplewick and are shown as John Robert Wells 30 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 26 yrs and their daughter Marjorie Elizabeth 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private John Robert Wells attested on 12th December 1915, he was mobilised for war on 21st June 1916 and served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He served abroad and was wounded, he was discharged from the Army on 29th August 1918 as being unfit for further service and awarded a Silver War Badge number 446048. He died on 27th July 1932.

Extra Information

His name is commemorated on a brass plaque at St Peters Church at Oxton, which reads : IN MEMORY OF JOHN ROBERT WELLS WHO DIED ON/ 27 JULY 1932 OF WOUNDS RECEIVED DURING THE GREAT WAR/ THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS
