Cyril John was born in 1889 at Radcliffe on Trent and was the son of John and Mary Ann Rickett (née Morley). His father John Rickett was born in 1857 at Southwell and his mother Mary Ann Morley was born in 1860 at Long Clawson, Nottinghamshire. They were married in 1882 and had four children, the eldest of whom died in infancy. All the children were born in Radcliffe on Trent: Edwin b. 1882 d. 1882, Ethel b. 1884, Cyril John b. 1889 and Margaret Annie b. 1893. The family was living at 177 Radford Road, Nottingham, in 1901. John was a shopkeeper, baker and confectioner, and his eldest daughter Ethel was his assistant. By 1911 census the family was living at 186 Denman Street, Radford. John was now a pork butcher on his own account, and his wife and Ethel were assisting in the business while Cyril was also a pork butcher. The youngest child, Margaret, was a sewing machinist. Ethel married Edward C Deane in 1912 and they had one son, Edward J (b. 1912). Edward served in the Northumberland Fusiliers and was killed in action on 25 September 1915 (See 'Extra information'). Ethel married secondly John Foster in 1924 and in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled, John Foster, a dairy farmer, Ethel and her son Edward, were living in Spislby. Also in the home were her parents, John, now retired, and Mary. John Rickett died in 1942; the probate record gave his address as Newstead Avenue, Mapperley. His widow probably died in 1943. Cyril John married Millicent Gertrude Atkin (b. 1890), the daughter of James and Elizabeth Atkin, in 1914. Cyril and Millicent lived in West Bridgford. Millicent married Homer W Cripps in 1921; she died in 1939.
1/8th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment), previously No. 6316 Cyril John Rickett enlisted at Nottingham, home address West Bridgford. He died of wounds at the Shepherds Bush Military Hospital, London, on 29th June 1918. He was interred in Nottingham General Cemetery (grave ref 8408) on 4 July 1918 following a service at the Albert Hall. John qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
John Cyril's brother-in-law, Charles Edward Deane, his sister Ethel's husband, served with the 12th Northumberland Fusiliers (6649 Private) and was killed in action (initially reported missing) on 25 September 1915.
