George Frederick Upton was born in 1898 and was the son of Arthur a farm labourer and Harriett Upton née Manchester of Main St, Oxton. His father Arthur was born in 1855 at East Bridgford and his mother Harriett Manchester was born in 1856 also at East Bridgford, they were married in 1878 at Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Ada b1880 died 1881, Ernest 1882, Frank b1883, Edith Mary 1884, Ada b1887, Leonard b1888, Herbert b1890, Ethel b1893, Alice b1894 and George Frederick b1898 all were born at Oxton. In the 1911 census he and his parents are living at Oxton village and are shown as Arthur 56 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Harriett 55 yrs and their son George 13 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private George Frederick Upton attested on 5th June 1916 at Mansfield, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 70 days, his address was 98 Moor Street, Mansfield, his next of kin was his father Arthur Upton of Oxton, he stated he was a labourer. Posted to the reserves the following day and mobilised for war on 18th November 1916 at Derby, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on 18th September 1918 and is buried at Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, Nord, France.
