Son of Edward Coke Bretland and his second wife, Rosie Annie (née Smith), who were married in 1896. Edward had a younger brother, Douglas, and also a half-brother, Reginald (1884), and three half-sisters, Louisa (1886), Gladys (1891) and Marion (1895) by his father's first marriage. At the time of the 1911 census the family was living at 5 Bridgford Road, West Bridgford.
