Family History

Thomas Ward (junior) was born 1897 at Leicester he was the son of Thomas Ward (senior) a bricklayer and his first wife. Thomas Ward (senior) was born in 1881 at Leicester, he married his second wife Elizabeth Attewell (born 1890) at Ruddington, they were married in 1908 at Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 St John’s Terrace, Ruddington, Thomas (senior) 30 yrs is a brick layer he is living with his wife Elizabeth 21 yrs and two of his children, Thomas 14 yrs a farm labourer and Emily 17 yrs.

Military History

Private Thomas Ward enlisted at Nottingham on 10th August 1914, giving his age as 18 yrs and 226 days, he served with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 27th December 1914 he received a gunshot wound to his head on 10th March 1915 and was admitted to the 6th Casualty clearing station where on 17th March 1915 he died of his wounds. He is buried at : Merville Communal Cemetery, France. Plot 2. Row G. Grave 7.
