Family History

Thomas Leslie Ward was born in 1896 he was the son of George a colliery banksman and Lilian Ward née Dexter and the brother of John Dexter, Ernest, Emily, Lilian and Allan Ward. George was born in 1853 at Steppingley, Bedfordshire, Lilian Dexter was born in 1860 at Selston, they were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they had 12 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 27 Kirkby Road, Sutton in Ashfield George 58 yrs is a colliery banksman, he is living with his wife Lilian 51 yrs and 6 of their children, Thomas Leslie is 15 yrs and a pony driver.

Military History

Private Thomas Leslie Ward served as Leslei Ward, he enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield. He initially served with the service number 12462 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 25th September 1915 whilst serving with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial
