Family History

Harry Ward was born in 1892 at Radford the son of the late William and Ellen Ward née Heath of 2 Greek Street, Nottingham. William was born in 1862 at Nottingham Ellen was born in 1863 also at Nottingham, they were married in 1884 at Nottingham, they had 8 children sadly one died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 2 Greek Street, Nottingham, Ellen 48 yrs is a widow and lace worker, she is living with 6 of her children, Harry is 19 yrs and is a soldier with the 1st battalion Grenadier Guards.

Military History

Lance Sergeant Harry Ward enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards, landing in France on 13th August 1914. He was wounded at Ypres 2nd November 1914 but returned to action. He was awarded the Military Medal in August 1917 for leading his men in action after all the officers became casualties. He was killed in action on 1st December 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Panel 2
