Family History

Ernest was born in 1888 in Retford and was the son of Annie Bird. In the 1901 census , Annie who is only 43 years of age is already a widow and is living at 143 Moorgate, Retford, with her is her son Ernest who is 13 years of age. By the 1911 census when Annie is 52 years she is living at Nooking, East Markham, still at home with her is her son Ernest who is now 23 years of age and a general labourer.

Military History

Soldiers died in the Great War states Ernest was born in Retford and at the time he enlisted he lived in Retford. He enlisted in Otley, Yorkshire. He fought during the first day of the battle of The Somme and was killed in action, his body was never recovered and identified and is therefore commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, The Somme.
