Fredric William James Kelsall was born in 1894 at Nantwich, Cheshire and was the son of Frederic a wholesale clothier and Mary Kelsall née Simmons of 98 Victoria Street, Newark. His father Frederic was born in 1869 at Newark and his mother Mary Simmons was born in 1870 at Nantwich, Cheshire, they were married in 1891 at Newark and went on to have 5 children, sadly one was to die in infancy, their surviving children all born in Newark were Frederic b1894, Harry b1897, Neil b1904 and Amy b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 98 Victoria Street, Newark and are shown as Fred 42 yrs a wholesale clothier, he is living with his wife Mary 41 yrs and their children Fred 17 yrs a house painter, Harry 14 yrs an apprentice motor engineer, Neil 7 yrs and Amy 3 yrs.
Frederic William James Kersall enlisted on 14th October 1911 at Newark and was posted 17th October 1911. He was transferred to the 1st battalion on 10th December 1912 and went out to India. He served there until 2nd September 1914 when the battalion returned to England. He went to France on 4th November 1915. He was admitted to no 13 General Hospital with gun shot wound to his back on 15th March 1915 and transferred to England on 17th March 1915 for treatment. Once he had recovered he embarked from Southampton on 28th August 1915 and went to Gallipoli. On 30th November 1915 he was admitted 'sick' to the hospital at Sulva Bay and on 4th December 1915 transferred to the 3rd Australian Hospital at Lemnos. On 10th January 1916 he was invalided back to England where he was admitted to the West Lancashire V.A.D Hospital at Oakdene, Rainham, Liverpool. On 6th February 1917 he was posted to the Army Reserves Class W and then to the National Fillings Station at Chilwell. He was discharged from the Army on 18th July 1917 being no longer physically fit for war service and awarded a silver war badge number 125908. He had served for a period of 5 years and 278 days he died on 17th August 1918 at Newark and is buried at Newark Cemetery.
