Herbert Cowley was born in 1898 at Elkesley, he was the son of Henry Cowley an agricultural labourer and Elizabeth Cowley née Allison of Elkesley, His father Henry was born in 1861 at Elkesely, Elizabeth Allinson was born in 1871 at Thorpe Salvin, they were married in Elkesley in 1897 they had a further two sons Ernest b1900 and Albert b1903 By the 1911 census the family were living at Elkesley . Henry 50 yrs was now working as a roadman labourer for the Rural District Council, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 40 yrs and their 3 sons, Herbert 13 yrs a school boy, Ernest 11 yrs and Albert 8 yrs of age.
Rifleman Herbert Cowley enlisted at East Retford, he was formerly served with the Regimental number 40929 of the Sherwood Foresters before joining the Royal Irish Rifles. He went to the Western front where he was killed in action, probably in the third battle of Ypres which commenced 31st July 1917 until the fall of Passchendaele in November. Having no known grave he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
