Family History

Henry Cowley was an agricultural labourer when he married Elizabeth Allison in Elkesley in 1897. By 1911 they had produced three children, Herbert born in 1898, Ernest 1900 and Albert born 1903. Henry was now working as a roadman labourer for the Rural District Council.

Military History

Herbert was formerly Regimental number 40929 of the Sherwood Foresters before joining the Royal Irish Rifles. He went to the Western front where he was killed in action, probably in the third battle of Ypres which commenced 31st July 1917 until the fall of Passchendaele in November. He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
