Military History

Lewis Henry Jackson enlisted in September 1914 into the Sherwood Foresters. After training he was posted to the 'D' Coy 1st Battalion in France on 6 March 1915. One week later during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, Lewis was killed in action. It is likely that he was killed as the battalion retired to the reserve trenches on the Rue De Tilleloy at Sign Post Corner. The withdrawal was begun at 2 am on 13th and by 4 am, it was completed. Lewis has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial France.
