James Sidney Stubbs

James Sidney/Sydney was the son of Aram Stubbs and Sarah Elizabeth Stubbs nee Wignall. Aram Stubbs was born in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire; the 1939 England & Wales Register gives his date of birth as 4 June 1858. Sarah Elizabeth Wignall was born in Billesdon, Leicestershire, in 1858 (O/N/D Billesdon). They were married in 1880 (J/F/M Bingham) and according to the 1911 Census, when they had been married for 31 years, they had had seven children of whom only four were still living. Four children were named on the census between 1881 and 1911: William Samson/Sampson b. Linby, Notts, 14 December 1880 (birth registered 1881 J/F/M Basford), Robert Aram b. Linby 3 January 1883 (J/F/M Basford), James Sidney b. Halam 1888 (O/N/D Southwell) and Gladys Victoria b. Halam 1897 (J/A/S Southwell). The census of 1891 also records a niece, Dorothy Stubbs Wignall b. Daybrook, Nottingham, 20 June 1887 (J/A/S Basford), in their household but in subsequent census she is described as Dorothy Stubbs, 'daughter', so appears to have been brought up with Aram and Sarah's children as one of the family. In 1881 Aram (22) a general servant (coachman) and Sarah (22) were living in Linby village with their son William (2 months). Also in the household was Willa Wignall (12, b. Billesdon 1888), who was Sarah's sister. By 1891 Aram was an agricultural labourer and living at Brockley Farm, Halam. He and Sarah now had three sons, William (10), Robert (8) and James (2 months). Also in the household was Dorothy Stubbs Wignall (3), their niece. The family continued to live in Halam after 1891. In 1901 Aram was described as a 'grazier, own account. Only three of their children were in the home on the night of the census; William (20) an agricultural labourer, James (12) and Gladys (3). Also in the home was Dorothy (13) who was described as their daughter. By 1911 only Dorothy (23), whose occupation was described as 'dairy work', James (22) who was working on the farm, and Gladys (13) who was still at school, were living in the family home. Also in the household on the night of the census was Aram and Sarah's granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Stubbs (5 b. Halam), who was probably William's daughter. Both William and Robert were married and living independently. Sarah Elizabeth died in 1938 (J/A/S Southwell) and Aram in 1943 (O/N/D Southwell) aged 85. Aram was recorded in the 1939 England & Wales Register living in Southwell with Dorothy (Crilly) and her husband, Sydney. James married Alice Margaret Jordan in 1915 (J/F/M Southwell). Alice was born on 14 April 1889 (bap. 1 September 1889) in Melbourne, Derbyshire, the daughter of Joseph, a carter, and Mary Jordan of Castle Street, Melbourne. However, by 1911 Joseph (b. 4 May 1865) and his family were living in Halam where he was a domestic gardener. Alice, who was one of their nine surviving children, had no occupation. James and Alice had one daughter, Alice M (b. 21 August 1916, J/A/S Southwell). The CWGC record gives his widow's address as Shepherd's Row, Southwell. Their daughter Alice married Sydney Ulyatt (b. 19 July 1914) in 1938 (O/N/D Southwell) and in 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register they were living at The Bungalow, Dover Street, Southwell, with her mother, Alice, and grandfather, Joseph Jordan (b. 4 May 1865) a retired gardener. James' widow, Alice, died in 1979 (J/F/M Newark) aged 89. Of James' three surviving siblings: William Samson married Ada Mary Heighton (b. Edingley, Nottinghamshire) in 1905 (A/M/J Southwell) and in 1911 were living in Halam, possibly at Machin's Farm. William was described as a 'farmer (employer)'. He and Ada had three children of whom only two were in the home on the night of the census: William (3) and James (1). The third child was probably Sarah Elizabeth (5) who was in her grandparents house that night. William and Ada had at least two more children: Dorothy Victoria b. 30 September 1911 (O/N/D Southwell, d. 2000 July Louth Lincs) and Robert Aram b. 27 November 1914 (J/F/M Southwell, d. 2000 Lincoln). Ada Mary died in 1916 (J/F/M Southwell) aged 37. In 1939 William was at Machin's Farm, Southwell, and described as a 'general farmer (own account)'. In the household were his daughter Dorothy, whose occupation was given as 'unpaid domestic duties', his son Robert Aram, a farm labourer 'assisting relative', and Richard Stubbs b. 4 January 1924 (J/F/M Southwell, mother's maiden name 'Stubbs', d. 1988) who was a student. William died on 11 March 1947; he was still living at Machin's Farm. Probate was awarded to his son Robert, described as a farmer, and his unmarried daughter, Dorothy Victoria. Robert Aram married Edith Olive Shelton (b. Hucknall, 1883) in 1903 (A/M/J Basford). In 1911 Robert, a platelayer for the Great Central Railway, and Edith were living at 4 Claremont Avenue, Hucknall Torkard, Nottingham. They had had six children of whom only three survived: Ernest Vincent (6, b.3 July 1904, d. 1987), Cyril James (3, b. 1907) and Edith Olive (10 months, b. 1910). Their daughter Edith died aged 3 in 1913 and another daughter, Gladys M. born later in 1911 (O/N/D Basford) died before her first birthday (1912 J/F/M Basford). Records show that the family moved to Doncaster where another daughter, Ivy B. was born in 1917 (O/N/D Doncaster) but she died the following year before her first birthday (1918 A/M/J Doncaster). Robert's second son, Cyril James, died aged 18 in 1925 (O/N/D Doncaster). There is then a record of Robert's marriage to Alice A [Audley] Ryles (b. 17 September 1884) in 1927 (O/N/D Newcastle-under-Lyme Staffordshire) and subsequently records of them on the Electoral Roll for Doncaster. In 1939 they were living in Adiwck-le-Street; Robert was a colliery horse keeper while Alice was engaged in 'unpaid domestic duties'. Robert died on 11 February 1957, according to the Probate record he and Alice were living at 50 Wood Street, Newark on Trent. Alice died on 10 February 1961; she was then living at Stanhope House, Bingham, Nottinghamshire. Gladys Victoria probably married James Birch in 1924 (J/A/S Southwell). In 1939 Gladys, now widowed, was living at Radley Terrace, Halam Lane, Southwell; she was engaged in 'unpaid domestic duties'l She died in 1954 (J/F/M Southwell) aged 56. James' cousin, Dorothy (known as Dorothy Stubbs) probably married Sydney Crilly (b. 10 June 1893) in 1924 (J/A/S Southwell). In 1939 they were living at The Firs, Back Lane, Southwell; Sidney was described as a farmer. Also in the home was the widowed Aram Stubbs, a retired farmer. Dorothy Crilly (b. 20 June 1887) died in 1969 (A/M/J Southwell) while her husband Sidney probably died on 27 July 1981.
