Family History

William Dickman was born in 1895 at West Stow and was the son of the late Robert Garner Dickman a brick makers labourer and Elizabeth Mary Ann Dickman née Fenner of West Stow, Bury St Edmunds. His father Robert Garner Dickman was born in 1859 at West Stow, he died on 21st January 1905 at West Stow, he was 45 yrs of age, his mother Elizabeth Mary Ann Fenn was born in 1862 at Woodwell, Suffolk, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Thingoe Registration district, Suffolk, they went on to have 10 children, their children were, Alice May b1882, Selina b1883, Amelia b1886, Robert George b1888, Elizabeth Mary b1891, William b1895, Arthur b1898, Ethel b1898 and Cecil b1901, all were born at West Stow. In the 1911 census the family were living at West Stow, Suffolk and were shown as Elizabeth Dickman 49 yrs a widow working as a domestic house cleaner, she is living with her children, William 16 yrs a domestic house boy, Arthur 13 yrs a carpenter at a wood yard, Ethel 13 yrs a scholar and Cecil 10 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private William Dickman enlisted at Nottingham, whilst residing at Southwell, he served with the 9th battalion East Surrey Regiment. He landed in France on 31st August 1915 he was killed in action on 26th September 1915 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
