He was the son of George and Mary Jane Woodward and the brother of George Henry Woodward. In 1911 they lived at 9 Clayton Terrace Clayton Street Nottingham. He was the husband of Nellie (née Heath) Woodward of 61 Portland Road Nottingham and the father of Phyllis (b.1913) and Winifred (b.1916) Woodward.
Pte. Walter Woodward, 1/5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, died of wounds on 29th December 1917. He is buried in Cambrin Military Cemetery
Death noticies published 17th January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WOODWARD. – Killed in action on December 29th, 1917, Pte. Walter Woodward, much loved husband of Nellie Woodward, 61 Portland-road. The great sacrifice. Deeply mourned. “WOODWARD. – Killed in action on December 29th, 1917, Pte. Walter Woodward, Trench Mortar Battery, for 14 years much valued servant of J. M. Perry and Co., Ltd. [1] Now deeply regretted. War obituary, All Saints Church News, February 1918: 'Walter Woodward, 61 Portland Road, Private Lincolnshire, attached Trench Mortar Battery, has service since July 1916, wounded January 1917, killed in action December 29th 1917, aged 28. He was a member of the office staff of Mr Perry in Stanford Street, he leaves a widow and two little girls.'
