Born 1882 in Nottingham. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Allwood he had 5 brothers. His father was a grocer and baker. The family lived on Main Street, Carlton, according to the 1891 and 1901 censuses. William married his wife Maud Mary Stubbins (born 23rd December 1882 ) in 1905 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. They lived at 70 Raleigh Street, Nottingham and had the following children, Maud born 28th August 1906, Phyllis born 26th January 1912, Kathleen born 3rd March 1915 and Marjorie born 1st July 1917. By the 1911 census William had married and was living at 70 Raleigh Street, Nottingham, with his wife Maud Mary and their daughter Maud Elizabeth. Following his death his widow Maud was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 17th March 1919. William is commemorated on the family grave in Carlton Cemetery.
He was attached to the 15th Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). He fell in action in France and died of his wounds. He is buried in the Cabaret Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez France. He was eligible for the British & Victory medals.
The Commonwealth war grave website gives his date of death as 4 April 1918. Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 25 September 1918: 'Allwood. Reported missing March 28th 1918, now reported killed in field hospital on April 4th 1918 as a prisoner of war, Private W Allwood, Scottish Rifles, aged 36. Husband of Maud Allwood, 70 Raleigh Street, Nottingham. Wife and children.' All Saints Church News, November 1918 (ROH): 'William Allwood, 70 Raleigh Street, Private in the Scottish Rifles, died of wounds in the hands of the enemy on or about April 4th, age 36. He leaves a widow and 4 children.'
