George Slater was born in 1885 at Granby and married his wife Ethel Best (born 26th April 1887 ) on 11th October 1910 at the Bingham Registry Office, they went on to have two sons Cyril born on 21st December 1910 and Victor born 8th September 1913 both born in Granby. In the 1911 census he is living at Granby and is shown as George Slater 26 yrs a stone quarryman he is living with his wife Ethel 23 yrs and their son Cyril 3 months of age. Folowing his death his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week to commence on 3rd February 1919
Lance Corporal George Slater enlisted on 21st July 1904 at Leicester, he elected to serve for 3 years with the colours and 9 years with the reserves. He gave his age as 19 yrs and 10 months and stated he was a general labourer. He was posted to the Leicestershire Regiment on 26th July 1904. At the outbreak of the war he was posted to France on 9th September 1914 and served with the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 15th June 1916 he was wounded in action on 21st February 1918. He was killed in action on 15th July 1918 and is buried at Buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery (grave ref XV.A.14)
