Alfred Lawrence Porter was born in 1894 and was the son of Lot Witham Porter a curtain card puncher and Hannah Elizabeth Porter née Holt, of 6, Wentworth Terrace, Forest Road West, Nottingham. His father Lot Witham was born in 1869 at Crich, Derbyshire and his mother Hannah Elizabeth Holt was born in 1859 in Melbourne, Derbyshire, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children all born in Nottingham, Harold Duncan 1891, Mary Ethel b1892, Alfred Lawrence b1894 and Florence Annie b1897. In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Wentworth Terrace, Forest Road West, Nottingham and are shown as Lot Witham 42 yrs a curtain card puncher, he is living with his wife Hannah Elizabeth 52 yrs and their children, Harold Duncan 20 yrs a marble polisher, Mary Ethel 19 yrs a lace finisher, Alfred Lawrence 17 yrs a butchers assistant and Florence Annie 14 yrs a slip winder in the lace trade.
Private Alfred Lawrence Porter, attested on 6th December 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 22 yrs and his address as 6 Wentworth Terrace, Forest Road, Nottingham, he gave his occupation as that of a joiners labourer and his next of kin as Lot Witham Porter (his father ) of the same address. He was posted to the reserves the following day and mobilised for war on 4th February 1916 and posted to the 1/23rd battalion Royal Fusiliers. He embarked from Southampton on 25th June 1916 and was admitted to hospital on 29th October 1916 with influenza. He recovered and returned to his regiment on 25th November 1916. He was killed in action on 1st July 1917 and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
War obituary, All Saints Church News, August 1917: 'Alfred L [Lawrence] Porter, 6 Wentworth Terrace, Private London Regiment, aged 23 [CWGC 25]. Joined the army February 1916, went to France a few months later, died of wounds under shell fire while in action on July 1st 1917. Attended All Saints schools, always affectionate and sympathetic for his blind mother.' Obituary published 16th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “PORTER. – Killed in action, July 1st, Private A. L. Porter, London Regiment, aged 23, beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Porter, 6, Wentworth-terrace, Forest-road. God will link the broken chain, closer when we meet again. – Broken-hearted mother, father, sister Ethel, Harold (R.E.), and wife. “PORTER. – Killed in action, July 1st, Private A. L. Porter, London Regiment, aged 23. God's taken the loved one from our home, but never our hearts. A sacrifice supreme. – Sorrowing sister Annie, brother Charlie (in France).” In memoriam published 1st July 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “PORTER. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. Alfred Porter, killed in action July 1st, 1917, London Regt.
