Family History

Stanley Adkin was born in 1893 at Loughton Leicestershire and was the son of John and Sarah Adkin (née Stanley). His father John Adkin was born in 1864 at Markfield, Leicestershire, and his mother Sarah Stanley was born in 1865 at Woodhouse Eaves, Leicestershire, They were married in 1884 (Loughborough registration district) and went on to have 13 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were: Betsy b1886 Woodhouse Eaves, Sarah b1890 Nanpanton, George b1891 Nanpanton, Stanley b1893 Loughton, Hilda b1895 Woodhouse Eaves, Alice b1898 Woodhouse Eaves, John b1900 Woodhouse Eaves, William b1901 Woodhouse Eaves, Charles b1903 Woodhouse Eaves and Arnold b1907 Woodhouse Eaves. In the 1911 census Stanley (19) was shown as a footman, one of 19 servants working at Gilling Castle, Yorkshire, the home of William Slingsby Hunter (62) and his family. At the time of the 1911 census Stanley's parents and siblings were living at Brand Cottage Woodhouse Eaves and shown as John 47 yrs, a gamekeeper, his wife Sarah 46 yrs and their children George 20 yrs a general labourer, Hilda 16 yrs a domestic servant, Alice 13 yrs, John 11 yrs, William 9 yrs and Charles 8 yrs who were all scholars and Arnold 4 yrs. The later CWGC record gives his parents' address as Longdale Cottage, Woodhouse Eaves, Loughborough.

Military History

Private Stanley Adkin enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 7th battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. He was killed in action on 2nd August 1916. He has no known grave andhis name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Extra Information

a.k.a. ""ADKINS"". His brother George Adkin served during the Great War in the Leicstershire Regiment. He was killed on 8th June 1917 aged 26. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
