Family History

Edward Hardy was born in 1889 at Oldham and was the son of George a farm labourer and Martha Hardy nee Arundale they lived on Ireland Lane Ossington. His father George was born in 1856 at Ossington and his mother Martha Ann Arundale was born in 1856 at Saddleworth, Yorkshire she died in 1908 aged 52 yrs the death was recorded in the Southwell Registration district, they were married in 1882 at Oldham and had the following children, Lizzie b1883 Oldham, George Arundale b1885 Oldham and Edward b1889 Oldham. In the 1911 census he is living with his widowed father at Osssington at his widowed grandmothers address. They are shown as Harriet Hardy 83 yrs a widow she is living with her son George 55 yrs a widow and farm labourer and her grandson Edward 22 yrs a farm Labourer.

Military History

Private Edward Hardy enlisted Newark and served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. His medal index card shows he first entered a theatre of war in the Balkans prior to 31st December 1915. He was killed in action on 30th July 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial Panel 39 and 42

Extra Information

His brother George Hardy also enlisted at Newark , he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters and was killed in action on 31st October 1916. (killed in action 31/10/1916).
