He was the son of Arthur and Rhoda Wardle and the brother of Charles Herbert, Sherwin*, Thomas*, Walter*, Edgar*, Bernard*, Leonard*, Maria, Ethel and Thurza Wardle. In 1891 they lived at The Black Horse Grimston Melton Mowbray where Arthur was the licensee. In 1911 William lived with his brother Charles and family at 12 Alderney Street Lenton Nottingham. * also served during the Great War
He attested 31/5/1902 standing 5' 5" and weighing 124 lbs. He gave his age as 18 years 10 months but he was actually 14 and ten months (CWGC, census data and Free BMD). He was transferred to the Reserve in 1910 and re-engaged 14/3/1914. He embarked 17/3 1915 and was killed in action 13th March 1915, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Panel 11.
His brother Private Edgar Wardle, 2nd (Garrison) Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment (formerly Royal Sussex Regiment), died at Karachi on 30th January 1918. Buried in Karachi Cemetery, he is commemorated on the Dehli Memorial. Born in Nottingham, he was living at Selsey, Sussex, at the time of his enlistment at Chichester. He was the husband of Florence Louisa Wardle, of 21, Conley Road, Church Road, Willesden, London.
