Family History

George William Harry Tassell was born in 1881 at St Neots and was the son of the late George a paper maker and Eliza (Naomi) Tassell née Newman of St Neots. His father George was born in 1859 in St Neots, he died in 1903 aged 44 yrs , his mother Naomi Newman was born in 1862 at Great Staunton, they were married in 1878 at St Neots and had a further son Bertie born 1891 also at St Neots. George married his wife Florence Rowlett (born 1881) in 1903 at St Neots, they lived at Bennetts Terrace, Mill Lane, Portland Street, Daybrook, Nottingham they had the following children , Charles William born February 1905 and Frank George born August 1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at Bennetts Terrace, Mill Lane, Portland Street, Daybrook, Nottingham and are shown as William 29 yrs a store keeper in gas meter depot for the city council he is living with his wife Florence 29 yrs and their son William 6 yrs of age. His widow Florence was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 31st January 1916. His widow later remarried to become Florence Smith (formerly Tassell) and lived at 17 Russell Street St. Neots Huntingdonshire.

Military History

Private George Wiliam Harry Tassell enlisted on 2nd March 1909 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 27 yrs and 4 months, his address as Bennett's Terrace, Portland Street, Daybrook, Nottingham, he was a labourer at the gas department, his next of kin was his wife Florence of the same address, he was posted to the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was embodied for war on on 5th August 1914 and landed in France on 28th February 1915. He was admitted to the 1/46th field ambulance on 16th July 1915 with gun shot wounds to his legs from which he died at 06.45 hrs the same day. He is buried at Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery, Belgium.
