James was born in Retford in 1892 and was the son of Thomas a general labourer and Alice Cordall (nee Scoggins) In the 1901 census Alice is already a widow and the family are living at Bollam, Retford with four of her children, sons Charles and James who is 9 years of age and a scholar and sisters Alice and Lucy.
James enlisted in Retford and served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys Regiment) He was killed in action on 5th July 1916 and is buried in Ovillers Cemetery, Somme, France Pte James Cordall Retford Times 28 July 1916 The news of the death of Pte James Cordall, Sherwood Foresters, son of Mrs Cordall, Bollam is conveyed in the following letter from Second Leiut R H Moore to deceased’s fiancée, Miss Gibons, Dean House, Castleton near Sunderland:- “ I deeply regret to inform you that your fiancée has been killed in action. Pte Cordall has always proved himself to be a capable soldier. I should be very pleased if you would forward this letter to the other relatives. Sympathising with you in your deplorable loss.” Pte Cordall was 24 years of age and prior to enlisting in January 1915, was employed at Messrs Ashworth’s mills as a picklemaker. He had been in France 10 weeks.
