William Drabble

William was the son of Samuel Drabble (also Samuel Glazebrook Drabble) and his wife Annie/Anne (née Jepson). His father Samuel was born in Caunton in 1857, the son of William and Elizabeth Drabble (née Bartle), and was baptised at Caunton St Andrew on 1 November 1857. In 1871 Samuel was a servant in the household of Samuel Glazebrook (77), a farmer of 68 acres, at the School House, Laxton, Nottinghamshire. His mother Annie Jepson was born in Laxton on 4 December 1862. Samuel and Annie were married at Laxton St Michael on 26 November 1879 and had ten children, seven of whom survived infancy. Nine children have been traced on census records. Seven were born in Caunton and baptised at the parish church of St Andrew: Sarah Elizabeth b. 1881 bap. 10 April 1881; George William b. 9 August 1883 bap. 30 September 1883; Samuel b. 3 December 1885 (reg. 1886 J/F/M), bap. 9 May 1886; Frederick b. 14 May 1888 bap. 24 June 1888; Elizabeth and Mary b. 1891 (A/M/J) d. 1891 (A/M/J); William b. 19 February 1893 bap. 28 May 1893. Two were born in Ossington, Nottinghamshire: Albert b. 1897 bap. Ossington Holy Rood 4 April 1897 and Annie b. 15 March 1905. In 1881 Samuel was an agricultural servant at High Street, Warsop, in the household of William Wagstaffe, a farmer of 300 acres. Samuel's wife and daughter, Sarah (2m), were living in Caunton. By 1891 Samuel, an agricultural labourer, and Annie were living at Caunton Lodge, Kersall Square, Caunton, with their five children, Sarah, George (8), Frederick (3) and newborn twins Elizabeth and Mary who died the same year. Samuel was a wagoner on a farm by 1901 when the family was living on Ireland Lane, Ossington. In the home on the night of the census were five of their six children Sarah, Samuel an agricultural labourer, Frederick, William (8) and Albert (4). The eldest son, George, was a cattleman and living and working at Knapenly Farm, Laxton, in the household of Richard Clark, a farm foreman, and his famly. Samuel and Annie were still living in Ossington in 1911 but with just two of their children, Frederick a farm labourer and Annie (6). Their daughter Sarah may have married in 1903. Their four sons were living and working on farms in Laxton. George had married Alice Jane Bull in 1910 and they and their son were living with Alice's parents, William, a farm foreman, and Ann at Knapenly Farm; George was head horseman. Also in the household was William (18), an under-horseman. Samuel, a wagoner, was employed by Robert Bennett and Albert was a farm servant working for Arthur Whitworth. Samuel snr. probably died in 1932. In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled, his widow Annie was living at the School House, Ossington, with her unmarried daughter Annie, a private laundress, her married son Samuel, a tractor driver, and his wife Dorothy (m. 1936), and also Frederick Walter Drabble (b. 28 December 1925, birth reg. 1926 J/F/M Southwell, mother's maiden name Drabble). Annie snr. died in 1946, her son Samuel in 1967 and Annie (later Coxon) in 1981. George and his wife Alice were living in Worksop in 1939; he was an estate worker. Also in the household were their twin daughters, Ruby and Pearl (b. 16 July 1920). George died in 1964. Albert married Mary Lee in 1920 and in 1939 he was a farm horseman and living with his wife in Balderton, Newark. He died in 1979.
