Andrew Walker Stiles was born in 1871 at Salford, Lancashire and was the son of Bradford Stiles an army surgeon and Mary Emma Stills née Walke of Ollerton. His father Bradford Stiles was born in 1831 at Marlborough, Wiltshire he died on 11th February 1895 the death was recorded at the Southwell registration district, he was 64 yrs of age, his mother Mary Emma Walke was born in 1847 at Devon, they were married in 1868 at Kensington, London and went on to have the following children, Ernest b1868 Plymouth, Mabel b1870 Kensington, Andrew b1871 Salford, Amy b1872 Ollerton, Lucy b1875 Ollerton Isabel b1879 and Muriel b1881 Ollerton.

It was reported on 1st December 1914 that Andrew Walker Stiles, a sanitary official for the Gold Coast government, had died of wounds received during the brief campaign in Togoland. Article published ‘Nottingham Evening Post,’ 1st December 1914. “NOTTINGHAM MAN’S DEATH IN AFRICA. “The death is reported of Andrew (Andie) Walker, the only surviving son of the late Staff-Surgeon Bradford Stiles and Mrs. Stiles, of Ollerton, Notts. Mr. Stiles was wounded at the time of the British occupation of Togoland, and succumbed to his injuries, which were accelerated by fever, a few days ago. He enlisted in 1888, and, after serving his full time received a pension, and, with the permission of the English Government, accepted a post under the colonial Government in Accra, West Africa. Mr. Stiles was in his 44th year, and his genial and kindly disposition gained him many friends.” There is no record of the man serving with any military unit; he is not recorded as a casualty of war by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
