George Hubbard was born in 1893 in Tibshelf and was a twin son of John William a grocer and draper and Emma Reynolds née Hubbard of Tibshelf,Alfreton,Derbyshire - His father John William was born in 1863 in Tibshelf and his mother Emma Hubbard was born in 1857 in Quorndon, Derbyshire, they were married in 1888 their marriage was record in the Mansfield Registration district, they had twin sons and three other children all the children were born in Tibshelf, their children were Lizzie b1889.Olive b1892, twins Frank Leslie and George Hubbard b1893 and Sylvia Marriott b1902. In the 1911 census the family are living at 31 High Street, Tibshelf and are shown as John William 48 yrs a grocer and draper, he is living with his wife Emma 54 yrs and their children Lizzie 22 yrs a drapers assistant, George Hubbard 17 yrs a scholar and his twin Frank Leslie 17 yrs a scholar and Sylvia Marriott 9 yrs a scholar.
Second Lieutenant George Hubbard Reynolds, graduated at Nottingham University,he was commission on 19th September 1914 into the 10th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment. He landed at Gallipoli, on 17th November 1915, he was killed in action on 9th April 1916 in Mesopotamia, his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial,panel 23
His twin brother Frank Leslie Reynolds served as a Second Lieutenant in the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment , he was killed in action on 20th July 1916.He and his brother are both also commemorated on the Tibshelf War Memorial. Obituary published 18th April 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “REYNOLDS. – Killed in action, on the 9th ult., [sic] Second-Lieutenant G. H. Reynolds, dearly-beloved nephew of Mrs. Marriott, “Claremont,” Wilford, aged 22 years. Peace, perfect, peace.” In memoriam published 18th April 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “REYNOLDS. – Killed in action, on the 9th ult., [sic] Second-Lieutenant G. H. Reynolds, dearly-beloved nephew of Mrs. Marriott, “Claremont,” Wilford, aged 22 years. Peace, perfect, peace.” Article published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 16th April 1916 :- TIBSHELF OFFICER KILLED ON THE TIGRIS.“News has been received at Tibshelf that Second-Lieutenant George Reynolds, of the South Lancashires, twin son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Reynolds, of Tibshelf, has been killed in action in Mesopotamia. His twin brother, Lieutenant Leslie Reynolds, who has been at home wounded, only returned to the front on Friday last.Further article published 18th April 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TIBSHELF OFFICER KILLED.“Mr. J. W. Reynolds, of Tibshelf, a well known local trader, has just received a wire from the War Office intimating that his twin son Lieut. Geo. H. Reynolds, of the South Lancashire Regiment, has been killed in action. At first he was reported missing. At the outbreak of war the deceased officer was at the Nottingham University where his brother Leslie, who also received a commission in the Sherwood Foresters, was also educated. Both were members of the O.T.C., under Capt. Trotman. The deceased, who was only 22 years old, was a brilliant student and qualified for a high educational post. He took part in the Gallipoli operations and was present at the evacuation of Suvla.
