Family History

Harold Mason Gleave was born on 21st December 1894 at Croydon, he was the son of William Richard an architect and Lois Gleave née Mason of 34 Bridgford Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham. His father William Richard was born in 1868 at Farnworth, Lancaster, his mother Lois Mason was born in 1865 at Bosden, Cheshire, they were married on 8th April 1894 at Emmanuel Church, Streatham Common, Lambeth, they had a further child a daughter Ida Kathleen in 1903. In the 1911 census the family were living at 34 Bridgford Road, West Bridgford, William Richard 43 yrs is an architect, he is living with his wife Lois 46 yrs and their daughter Ida Kathleen 8 yrs of age, In the same 1911 census we find that Harold Maon Gleave has left the family home, he is living at Aldenham School Elstree, Hertfordshire, he is 16 yrs and a school boy.

Military History

Captain Harold Mason Gleave was mobilised on 31st August 1914 at Plymouth and joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 4th January 1915 He was promoted Lieutenant in Jan 1915, and in July /Aug 1915 he suffered Gun Shot Wound (thigh) and was treated at Queen Alexandra’s, Millbank. He returned to His Regiment in France July 1916, having been promoted to Captain.He was killed in action and also Mentioned in Dispatches 6 Mar 1917 he was killed in action on 6th March 1917, age 22.Buried: Hem Farm Military Cemetery, Hem-Monacu, France. Plot 1, Row H, Grave 24.
