Son of George and Eliza Brumby.1901 census (ref: 7/51): George (head) age 29, Eliza (wife) age 39, Norman (son). age 3 (b. abt 1898) born Dunham, John Priestley age 14, Garnet Priestley age 11. John and Garnet were Norman's half-brothers. He also had a sister, Lily, who was 17 at the time he enlisted in June 1916. His army record also lists two half-sisters, details in 1916: Eva Priestley (age 43, 8 Attencliffe Road, Sheffield) and Alice Powell (age 39, 73 Derby Street, Derby)
Army Service Record survives. He took the oath in Newark in June 1916, age 18 years 71 days. Medical examination November 1916; he was only 5' 1" tall and weighed 122lbs. He became a prisoner of war and died in a prisoner of war camp. Buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery (grave ref VIII.A.9) which was begun by the Germans in 1915 for the burial of POWs from the local prison camp but after the war other servicemen were reburied in the cemetery from other cemeteries in Germany..
