Frank William Shaw was born in 1885 at Burton Upon Trent and was the son of the Rev. William a primitive Methodist minister and the late Sarah Shaw née Durdy of 12 Crown Street, Newark. His father William was born in 1855 at Tickhill, Yorkshire and his mother Sarah Durby was born in 1855 at Harworth, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1879 at Worksop and went on to have 7 children, Florence b1880 Horncastle, George Henry b1884 Boston, Lincs. Frank William b1885, Burton, Robert Robinson b1887 Burton, Charles Edward b1888 Burton, Reginald b1890 Ripley and Alfred Percy b1892 Pudsey, Yorkshire. In the 1911 census the his parents are living at 46 Harcourt Terrace, Salisbury and are shown as William Shaw 56 yrs a primitive Methodist minister, he is living with his wife Sarah 56 yrs and their son Alfred Percy Shaw 19 yrs a shop assistant. In the same 1911 census Frank William Shaw is living at 6 High Street, Banbury , he is shown as being single 26 yrs an assistant draper, he is living with Mr A.J.Larkin Smith 43 yrs and his wife , a shopkeeper/draper. Frank William Shaw married his wife Emma Henrietta Drake on 25th May 1915 at Wroxton, Banbury, Oxfordshire.
Lance Corporal Frank William Shaw enlisted at Selby he initially served with the service number 25873 in the Oxford & Buckingham Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 17th October 1917 whilst serving with the 194th Company Machine Gun Corps . He is buried at Aeroplane Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Article published 14th November 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Second son of Reverend William & Sarah Shaw, 12 Crown Street, Newark. Husband of Emma Henrietta Shaw of Wroxton, Banbury. Joined the Oxfordshire Territorials some three or four years since and subsequently the Oxford & Bucks. Light Infantry. At his own request he was transferred to Belton Park Camp and was there trained for the Machine Gun Corps. He was sent to the front in France last November. Killed in action on Oct. 17th. Two years ago he was married to the daughter of Mr & Mrs Drake, butler and house steward to Lord North of Wroxton Abbey, near Banbury. His youngest brother, Sgt. A. Percy Shaw, R.A.M.C. is in hospital at Rouen, slowly recovering from the effects of German gassing some two months ago.
