Joseph Shaw, a general carter and corporation worker from Retford, married Ann Lane in 1867. Between 1870 and 1886 they produced seven children, who were all born in Retford, including John Herbert Shaw born in 1884. By 1901 he was employed as a bread baker and in 1905 he married Ethel Greaves in Retford. The couple settled in 12 Wharf Street where John had changed his occupation to a beef and pork butcher. Before 1917, John and Ethel were parents to two boys and four girls.
John Shaw enlisted in Retford in the Sherwood Foresters and was at some stage attached to the 105th Trench Mortar Battery. He was killed in the Somme region and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France. Pte J H Shaw Retford Times 10th May 1918 The above is a portrait of Pte J H Shaw, Sherwood Foresters, 12 Carr Road, Retford, whose death was reported in our issue of April 26th. He was 34 years of age and was the fifth son of Mr Joseph Shaw, Wharf Road, an old employee of the Retford Corporation. The deceased leaves a widow and six children.
