George was born in 1892 at Newark and was the son of William a foreman at the Midland Railway and Phoebe Cobb née Footitt of 76 Sleaford Road Newark. His father William was born in 1850 at Newark and his mother Phoebe Footitt was also born in 1850 at Newark, his mother appears to have had a daughter Ann Footitt born in 1868, his parents married in 1870 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Sarah Ann b1871, Phoebe b1873, Martha b1874, Eliza b1876, William b1876, Ellen b1880, Henry b1882, Charles b1886, Georgina b1899, and George b1892. In the 1911 census the family are living at 44 Parliament Street, Newark and are shown as William 61 yrs a foreman on the midland railway, he is living with his wife Phoebe 61 yrs and their son George 19 yrs a foundry painter. His mother Phoebe died in 1916 at Newark she was 66 yrs of age.
Rifleman George Cobb enlisted on 20th December 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 22 yrs and 133 days , he gave his occupation as that of a porter and his address as 44 Parliament Street, Newark, his next of kin was his father William of the same address .He joined the Kings Royal Rifle Corps at Winchester barracks on 22nd December 1914 and was posted as a rifleman in the King's Royal Rifle Corps on 4th January 1915. He embarked for France on 19th May 1915. He was admitted to the 44th Field Ambulance with Pyrexia on 18th January 1916 however he rejoined his battalion on 26th January 1916. He was killed in action on 19th August 1916 at Deville Wood, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Article published 2nd September 1916 in the Newark Herald :- Son of William & Phoebe Cobb, 76 Sleaford Road, Newark. Enlisted on December 20th, 1914. Aged 22 and employed as a porter. Previous service with the 8th (Territorial) Sherwood Foresters. Embarked for France on May 19th, 1915. Hospitalised with Diphtheria on January 18th, 1916. Rejoined unit on January 26th. Killed in Action. Service papers give parents’ address as 44 Parliament Street.
