Walter Gilbert Harrison born at 195 Fowler Street, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield around 1890. His parents were Walter and Margaret Alice Harrison who had had a daughter, also called Margaret Alice, the previous year, these being their only two children. In 1901, the two children and their mother, were residing at 404 Glossop Road, Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield and their father was away working as an accountant at Caistor, Lincolnshire. The Glossop Road address was to be the long term residence for the Harrisons. By 1911, Walter Gilbert had left the Sheffield area and was working as an estate clerk at Clumber Park, Worksop, residing with John and Mary Hall at New Cottages, Hardwick, Clumber Park, Worksop. His mother and sister were still in the same house in Sheffield, and his father occupying 108 Woodside Lane, Sheffield as a shop and beerhouse keeper. Walter Gilbert Harrison later moved from Worksop, as when he ‘signed on’, he gave his address as Stavely Farm, Knarsborough, farm estate steward.
Soldiers Record - Walter Gilbert Harrison was attested at Harrogate on the 6th Dec 1915 his address being Stavely Farm, Knarsborough age 27 years 7 months. His next kin was his father, Walter Harrison, of 404 Glossop Road, Sheffield. He was placed on reserve and attestation form signed and approved on the 16/2/1916 with the 15th (Res) Bn Yorks and Lancs. After his short training, he was posted to the 14th Battalion Yorks and Lances and drafted to France, via, Etaples, on the 1st July 1916. He attended with the South Lancs on 10/7/1916 whilst in the field. He was wounded and died of his wounds on the 20th July 1916 and was buried at Dartmoor Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, France. Pte. Gilbert Harrison Worksop Guardian 11 August 1916 Pte. Gilbert Harrison was in the South Lancs. Regiment, but no details are yet to hand as to the manner in which his death occurred. Pte. Harrison will be remembered as at one time in the Newcastle Estates Offices at Worksop, and later a pupil of Mr W. Beattie, farm Steward at Hardwick. He enlisted about five months ago in the Y. and L. but was later transferred to the South Lancs, and had only been in France about six weeks. Pte. Harrison, who was 27 years of age, was a native of Sheffield, where his parents still reside, and a pathetic coincidence is that his sister was accidentally drowned on the day before her brother was killed. Pte. Harrison made many friends in Worksop, and particularly in the Clumber District, during the few years stay, and they will regret his death very much. Sincere sympathy is expressed with his parents in their double sorrow
