William Henry Manchester Guy was born in 1875 at East Bridgford and He was the son of Edward and Caroline Guy née Manchester and the husband of Sarah Ann Hopkinson (formerly Guy née Skillington) of Main Street, East Bridgford, Nottingham William had a sister, Rose Elizabeth, who died aged 28 years on 6 October 1915 less than a fortnight after her brother's death. Their mother died on 14 April 1926 aged 70 years and their father died on 23 July 1927 aged 70 years. William married his wife Sarah Ann Skillington (born 21st July 1877) in 1899 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham Registration District, they lived at 5 Chester Place, Boundary Road, Newark, they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in East Bridgford, Robert Edward b1900, Walter Charles born 24th April 1901, Winifred born 13th July 1907, Leah born 16th October 1910 and Rose Mona born 2nd February 1913. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Chester Place, Boundary Road, Newark and are shown as William Henry Guy 36 yrs a boatman, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 35 yrs and their children, Robert Edward 11 yrs a scholar, Walter Charles 9 yrs a scholar, Winifred 3 yrs and Leah 5 months. Following his death his widow Sarah Ann was awarded a pension of 25 shillings a week which commenced on 8th May 1916 and was increased to 28 shillings and 9 pence on 4th April 1917. His widow re married on 29th October 1917 to George Hopkinson.
Private William Henry Manchester Guy, enlisted at Newark on 14th September 1914 and served with “B” Company, 12th (Pioneer) Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 26th September 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Family grave St Peter's churchyard, East Bridgford: ‘In loving memory of Edward Guy, who died July 23rd 1927, aged 70 years. And Caroline, his wife, who died April 14th 1926, aged 70 years. Also their son & daughter. William Henry, killed in action Sepr. 27th (sic) 1915, aged 38 years. Rose Elizabeth, who died Octr. 6th 1915, aged 28 years. Rest in peace.’ Article published in the Newark Advertiser 13th October 1915 :- Son of Edward & Caroline Guy. Husband of Sarah Ann Guy, 5 Chester Place, Newark. A native of East Bridgeford, he came to Newark ten years ago, when he worked as a gravel getter, first with Mr W. Chapman and afterwards with Mr J.A. Antcliffe. Later employed by Messrs. Cafferata. Enlisted on the 14th Sept. in the 12th Sherwood Foresters. Drafted to Shoreham, he set sail with his regiment for the scene of the hostilities only five weeks ago. Was working with the battalion cooks before being killed by a shell. Leaves a widow and five children. The eldest being a boy of 15 and the youngest a girl of two.
