He was the son of William and Kate Gilliatt and the brother of John William and Christopher Joseph Gilliatt. In 1911 they lived at 24 Stratford Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham. His brother, Private Christopher Gilliatt, 17th Bn Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), was killed in action on 27 July 1917.
Private Harold Frank Gilliatt enlisted in Nottingham and served with C Company 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he landed in France on 14th July 1915. Reported in Red Cross Enquiry List, 1 September 1916, as missing 14 February 1916. He was killed during a German raid near the canal south-east of Ypres, Belgium, he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
Pte. Harold Frederick Gilliatt, 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment,) wrote to acknowledge a gift of cigarettes in a note printed on 30th November 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post. “Many thanks for your cigarettes from [the] “Football Post” Fund.
