John Robert Swallow was born in 1896 at Hucknall and was the son of John Edward a farmer and Alice Swallow née Eldred of Stanley Grange Teversall Mansfield Nottinghamshire. His father John Edward was born in 1858 at South Kyme, Lincolnshire, his mother Alice Eldred was born in 1858 at Sutterton, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Hornsea registration district, they went on to have the following children, Edward Arthur b1884, Alice Edith b1886, Leonard Eldred b1890, Winifred Maud b1893 , John Robert b1896, Hucknall (killed in action 14/9/1917), Horace Cecil b1897 Hucknall, Elsie Annie b1899 Hucknall and Sidney A Swallow b1903 at Teversall. They lived at Stanley Grange Teversall Mansfield Nottinghamshire in the 1911 census and are shown as John Edward 53 yrs a farmer, he is livign with his wife Alice 53 yrs and their children, Edward Arthur 27 yrs a farmers son working on the farm, Alice Edith 25 yrs an elementary school teacher, Leonard Eldred 21 yrs a farmers son working on the farm, Winifred Maud 18 yrs no occupation listed, John Robert 15 yrs a farmers son working on the farm, Horace Cecil 14 yrs a farmers son working on the farm, Elsie Annie 12 yrs a scholar and Sidney 8 yrs .
Private John Robert Swallow enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Teversall he initially served with the York and Lancaster Regiment and later served with the 17th Labour battalion and transferred (18439) to 31st Coy Labour Corps. He was killed in action on 14th September 1917 and is buried at Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
His brother Private Horace Cecil Swallow enlisted at Stanton Hill whilst residing at Mansfield, he initially served with the service number 40223 in the South Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd April 1917 aged 20 yrs and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France bay 6.
