Family History

Gerald Richard Sears was born in 1898 at Whatton and was the son f John a gardener and Eliza Ann Sears née Latter of Whatton village. His father John was born in 1854 at East Farleigh, Kent and his mother Eliza Ann Latter was born in 1853 at Teston, Kent they were married on 7th October 1880 at St Peters Church, Cranley Gardens, Kensington, London and went on to have the following children, all of whom were born in Whatton, Edgar b1882, Alice b1883, Bertha b1885, Harold b1888, Mabel b1889, Ada b1891, William b1893, George b1896, and Gerald b1898. In the 1911 census the family are living at Whatton village and are shown as John 57 yrs a gardener, he is living with his wife Eliza Ann 58 yrs and their son Gerald Richard 12 yrs.

Military History

Rifleman Gerald Richard Sears enlisted at Grantham whilst residing at Nottingham, he served with the 11th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 17th August 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Somme, France. panel 115-119, 162A, 163A
