Family History

The fourth son of Robert and Annie Maria Hale born 1893. He was born at Radcliffe on Trent where the family were living in 1901 on Station Terrace. Prior to 1904 the family moved and by 1911 they were living at 166, Curzon Street, Netherfield, where Robert and Ernest were working on the railways. Harold and Gertrude, two of Robert's children were buried in Carlton cemetery and Ernest was also commemorated on this headstone. Following Ernests death his personal effects were sent to his parents. these included a prayer book, a psalm and a testament as well as letters and notebooks.

Military History

Ernest attested at Carlton on 5 November 1909 joining the 8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, Territorial Force. During his time Ernest attended the annual training camps at Buxton, Scarborough, Aberystwyth, Thoresby Park and Hunmanby. As a Territorial Ernest had to sign an agreement stating that he would agree to serve anywhere in the event of a national emergency and this he duly did on 3 September 1914 at Harpenden. On 1st November 1914 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and on 2nd March 1915 he was part of the British Expeditionary Force to France. He was killed in action and is buried at Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos in the Pas de Calais region of France. He was eligible for the 1915 Star, British and Victory medals which were individually sent to his parents between December 1920 and January 1921.
