George Henry Poole was born in 1895 at Newark and was the son of William a boiler maker and Emma Poole née Robinson of 15, Tenter Buildings, Newark. His father William was born in 1856 at Newark and his mother Emma Robinson was born in 1858 also at Newark, they were married in 1875 at Newark and went on to have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Rose b1877, Annie b1881, Emma b1883, Eliza b1885, Ada b1888 and George Henry b1895 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 15 Tenter Buildings, Newark and are shown as William 55 yrs a boiler maker, he is living with his wife Emma 53 yrs and their son George 16 yrs a general labourer, also living with the family was Charles Middleton 11 yrs a grandson. George Henry Poole married his wife Daisy Todd in 1916 at Newark, they went on to have a son William born the same year, they lived at 14 Shepherd’s Row, Newark.
Private George Henry Poole enlisted at Newark on 9th March 1917 and initially served with the service number 8092 in the Labour Corps before transferring to the 11th battalion Northumberland Fusilier .He was killed in action on 27th October 1918 and is buried at Tezze British Cemetery, Italy. grave reference 3.B.4
Article published 27th November 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Only son of Mr William Poole & late Mrs Poole, 15 Tenter Buildings, Newark. Resided with wife and two year old son at 14, Shepherd’s Row. Worked for the Farrar Boiler Co. Ltd. and joined up on March 9th, 1917, when he entered a Labour Company. Being afterwards graded ‘A’ and transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers. Last home seven weeks ago on leave. Killed in action by a machine gun bullet.
