Family History

Luther was born in 1894 at Skegby the son of Benjamin a coal miner hewer at the local colliery his wife Jane Caunt née Smith of Skegby Forest. Benjamin was born in 1859 at Skegby, Jane Smith was born in 1865 at Sutton, they were married on 31st October 1887 at St Marys Church, Sutton in Ashfield they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.

Military History

Luther Caunt enlisted at Mansfield and survived Gallipoli in 1915 and the Somme in 1916. On 19th August 1917, the battalion was involved in The Battle of Langemarck. At 8.30 p.m the enemy sent over a heavy barrage which targeted Headquarters. Four Lewis gunners, including Caunt, were killed and seven wounded by one shell.
