Edwin was born in 1896 in Smalley Derbyshire and was the son of George a coal miner hewer and Hannah Matthews née Street of 33 Eaton Street, Mapperley, Nottingham. George was born in 1859 at Ilkeston, Hannah Street was born in 1858 at Horsley, Derbyshire, married in 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had a large family of 9 children , Elizabeth, Thomas, Nellie, Charles, John, Jane, Edwin and William. In the 1911 George and Hannah with 3 of their children, Charley 21 yrs , Edwin 15 years a colliery horse driver, below ground. and Willie 11 years are living at 33 Eaton Street, Nottingham.
Private Edwin Matthews enlisted in Nottingham whilst residing in Mapperley. he served with the 7th battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. he was killed in during the action to retake 'The Bluff.' near Ypres in Belgium , his body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Menin gate memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
His brother Private Charles Frederick Matthews, served with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, he landed in France on 13th September 1914 and died of wounds on 16th September 1914 and is buried in Guards Grave, Villers Cotterets Forest.
