Family History

George William Starbuck was born on 15th March 1875 at Statham and was the son of Thomas a tailor and his first wife the late Emma Starbuck née Goodson of Stathern Melton Mowbray Leicestershire. His father Thomas was born in 1852 at Harby, Leicestershire, his mother Emma Goodson was born in 1856 at Stathern, she died in 1875 at Stathern, she was 29yrs of age, they were married on 18th May 1874 at Stathern they went on to have George William Starbuck. His father later re married in 1876 to Martha Baker, their marriage was recorded in the Melton Mowbray registration district, they went on to have the following children, Oliver b1877, Frederick b1882, Harry b1884 and Leonard b1887 all were born at Stathern. George William married his wife Minnie Mann (born 21st November 1873) in 1899 their marriage was at the Methodist Free Church in Netherfield, they went on to have the following children, George Wilfred born 1900,(died 1902) Florence born 11th August 1901, Muriel born 18th March 1904, Albert born 20th May 1906, all were born in Netherfield the family then moved to Derby where they had their remaining children, Harry Goodson born 29th March 1908, Arthur born 28th April 1909, Freda born 23rd August 1910 and Harold Ernest born 22nd July 1913. The family lived at 43 May Street, Derby. In the 1911 census the family are living at 43 May Street, Derby George is shown as being 36 yrs and a tailor, he is living with his wife Minne 36 yrs and their children, Florence 9 yrs a scholar, Muriel 6 yrs, Albert 4 yrs, Harry Goodson 3 yrs Arthur 1 year and Freda 7 months of age. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at 13 Forester Street, Netherfield and are shown as Thomas 58 yrs a tailor, he is living with his wife Martha 63 yrs and their son Leonard 24 years a tailor. Following his death his widow Minnie was awarded a pension of 31 shillings a week which commenced on 24th January 1916.

Military History

Lance Corporal George William Starbuck enlisted on 8th August,1914 at Derby giving his age as 35 yrs and was a tailor living at 43 May Street, Derby, he next of kin was his wife Minnie of the same address. Posted to the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he went to France on 1st March 1915 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 6th April 1915. He was diagnosed as having rheumatism at a field ambulance 10th July 1918 and was sent to Divisional Rest Station. From there he was put on an ambulance train and died 20th July 1915, age 40 of heart failure at 2nd General Hospital, Le Havre, France. He is buried at Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France. Div. 19. F. 11.
