Family History

Harry was born on 12th September 1893 in Radford, Nottingham he was the son of William a joiner and wheelwright and Mary Ann Marston née Sumners, they lived in Norwell His father William was born in 1861 in the Bingham registration District, he was first married to Jane Brown who he married in 1885 in the Southwell Registration district they had the following children , all born in Norwell Percy William b1886, Beatrice Elizabeth b1889, Evelyn Albert b1899. In 1891 Williams first wife Jane died aged 31 yrs , her death is recorded in the Southwell Registration area . William re marries Mary Ann Sumners in 1893 in Nottingham , they go on to have the following children , Harry b1894 Radford , Robert b1897 Norwell, Albert 1899 Norwell and Hilda Alice b1902 Norwell. In 1901 the family were living at the Plough Inn Norwell Nottinghamshire. In 1911 Harry was boarding at 3 Market Street Worksop, (a boarding house) he is shown as being 17 yrs of age single an office boy living with 3 others boarders and head of the house Bithian Clay 70 yrs a widow and boarding house keeper. In the same census his family are still living at Norwell, William is 49 yrs a joiner and wheelwright head of the family , he is living with his second wife Mary Ann 51 yrs and his children Percy 24 yrs a joiner and wheelwright, Beatrice 22 yrs who is assisting in her fathers business, Robert 14 yrs a scholar, Evelyn Albert 12 yrs a scholar and Hilda Alice 8 yrs a scholar

Military History

Private Harry Marston enlisted in Grantham and served with 2/4th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 3rd April 1917 and is buried in Templeux-le-Guerard Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France (grave reference C.31).

Family memorial, St Laurence, Norwell: 'To the glory of God and in loving memory of Harry Marston of the 2/4th Lincs Regt, son of William and Mary Ann Marston, killed in action at Roisel, April 3rd 1917. Interred at Templeux Le Gerrard (sic) aged 23 years. RIP'
