Family History

He was the son of John and Ellen Stokes of Kinoulton Nottinghamshire. He was the husband of Bertha Hudson (formerly Stokes) of Hockwold Brandon Norfolk. In 1901 John (41), a cattleman, Ellen (40) and their children, Henry (14), Mary A (10), George (10) and Frank (5) were living in Kinoulton. In 1911 George was still single and a farm labourer in the household of William Starbuck farmer, in Horninghold Uppingham. He married Bertha (née Mayes) in the registration district of Thetford Norfolk in O/N/D/1914. George's brother Private Frank Stokes 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters died of wounds on 12 March 1915 aged 19.

Military History

Formerly 14336 Hussars of the Line, he was in the Balkans from 9 September 1915. He died of wounds and is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. He was awarded the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal (he is listed as a 'Private' on the medal roll).
