Lawrence Stevens was born in 1899 at New Basford and was the son of Sam Stevens. a lace maker and his first wife the late Mary Elizabeth Stevens née Brown of 55 Constance Street, New Basford, Nottingham. His father Sam was born in 1871 at Basford, his mother Mary Elizabeth Brown was born in 1877 at Nottingham, she died in 1908 at Nottingham aged 31 yrs, they were married in 1897 at Nottingham. His father re married in 1911 at Nottingham to Ethel Alice Knight, they went on to have a son Sam born in 1913 in Nottingham. in the 1911 census Lawrence was living with his widowed father Sam at 55 Constance Street, New Basford, they were shown as Sam Stevens 40 yrs a widow and a lace maker, he is living with his son Lawrence 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Lawrence Stevens enlisted at Reading whilst residing at New Basford, Nottingham, he served with the 1/4th battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 27th August 1917 and is buried at the New Irish Farm Cemetery.
