Ernest Arthur Young was born in 1898 at Sutton Bonnington and was the son of Mary Ann Young of Vine Farm, Bunny, Nottinghamshire. His mother Mary Ann Young was born in 1882 at Kegworth, she went on to marry Peter Matthew Beswick (born 1887 Sutton Bonnington,) in 1912 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough registration district. In the 1901 census Ernest is living at The Boat Inn, Sutton Bonnington he is shown as being two years of age, he is living with his mother Mary Young 19 yrs a hosiery factory hand, they are living with his mothers aunt and uncle, Joseph Marsh 62 yrs an inn keeper and his wife Ann Marsh 59 yrs.
Private Ernest Young enlisted at Ilkeston on 5th June 1916 he gave his age as 18 yrs and 1 month, his address as 8 Oaklands Ave, New Lawley, he stated he was a joiners labourer and his next of kin was his father Richard Young. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 4th September 1916. He initially served with the service number 5748 with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on 19th June 1917. He embarked from Folkstone on 27th August 1917 landing the same day at Boulogne. He was killed in action on 23rd September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
